I stood in the East Wing where the soldiers were with Zuri and Kaizer, waiting for them to adorn their armor so we could leave. I talked him down to just two soldiers, as taking all fifty we brought with us would put a strain on my magic and was extremely unnecessary. He chose two men I didnât know, their names rhymed or something, but I couldnât bring myself to care what they were.
âWhere are we going?â Zuri asked.
âI donât actually know. What do you want to see, Kaizer?â
âWhatever you think holds the most importance. What makes Caldera, Caldera?â
âThe brujas,â I responded flatly.
âNo landmarks or great wonders of your kingdom?â
I smiled. âSure, I can think of a few.â
âElias, Enzo, are you ready?â Kaizer asked his soldiers.
Alliteration, not rhyming, oops.
âYes, Your Majesty,â they boomed, and I rolled my eyes.
âEver traveled by portal, boys?â I asked the soldiers.
They shook their heads in unison.
âWell, allow me to be your first,â I said with a wink before snapping open a portal in front of me.
âWe justâ¦step through?â the one on the right asked. Enzo?
âThatâs all there is to it.â I shrugged, grabbing Zuri by her arm and pulling her into the portal with me.
Purple smoke and shadow encompassed us as Kaizer stepped through, then the two soldiers fell over top of each other onto the ground in front of the portal. I made it slightly unstable when they walked through, and Zuri looked over at me like she knew what I was up to. I shrugged again and pushed through the smoke as my feet squished into the hot sand.
âA desert?â Kaizer asked.
âItâs one of our jewels,â I said with a sarcastic smile.
âDo people live here?â Zuri asked.
âMore than just people,â I joked, looking out over the rippling sand.
The two soldiers put their hands on the hilts of their swords and scanned the area, and I laughed. âOh, those wonât do you any good here. The monsters that roam this place canât be cut down with your blades.â
âWhat kills them?â one of the soldiers asked.
âBetter weapons and witch magic.â I winked. âCome on. There is something I want to show you here.â
We pushed through the sand, all the others losing their footing and sliding around the mounds of blazing hot particles. My foot hit the hollow ground, and I held my hand up for them to stop as I crouched down. As much as I hated this fucking place, I really loved this one small part of it. I placed my hand in the sand and pushed it down until the substance fully covered it, and I felt the grooves I was looking for. Letting my magic seep from my fingers and into the channels, I looked back at Zuriâs face. Her brows pulled together, looking at me as if Iâd lost my mind. The lock clicked, and I smirked as the ground beneath us shook. Erect stone emerged from the ground and sand poured down like liquid as the mural I brought them here to see came to its full height.
