I stood in the East Wing where the soldiers were with Zuri and Kaizer, waiting for them to adorn their armor so we could leave. I talked him down to just two soldiers, as taking all fifty we brought with us would put a strain on my magic and was extremely unnecessary. He chose two men I didn’t know, their names rhymed or something, but I couldn’t bring myself to care what they were.

“Where are we going?” Zuri asked.

“I don’t actually know. What do you want to see, Kaizer?”

“Whatever you think holds the most importance. What makes Caldera, Caldera?”

“The brujas,” I responded flatly.

“No landmarks or great wonders of your kingdom?”

I smiled. “Sure, I can think of a few.”

“Elias, Enzo, are you ready?” Kaizer asked his soldiers.

Alliteration, not rhyming, oops.

“Yes, Your Majesty,” they boomed, and I rolled my eyes.

“Ever traveled by portal, boys?” I asked the soldiers.

They shook their heads in unison.

“Well, allow me to be your first,” I said with a wink before snapping open a portal in front of me.

“We just…step through?” the one on the right asked. Enzo?

“That’s all there is to it.” I shrugged, grabbing Zuri by her arm and pulling her into the portal with me.

Purple smoke and shadow encompassed us as Kaizer stepped through, then the two soldiers fell over top of each other onto the ground in front of the portal. I made it slightly unstable when they walked through, and Zuri looked over at me like she knew what I was up to. I shrugged again and pushed through the smoke as my feet squished into the hot sand.

“A desert?” Kaizer asked.

“It’s one of our jewels,” I said with a sarcastic smile.

“Do people live here?” Zuri asked.

“More than just people,” I joked, looking out over the rippling sand.

The two soldiers put their hands on the hilts of their swords and scanned the area, and I laughed. “Oh, those won’t do you any good here. The monsters that roam this place can’t be cut down with your blades.”

“What kills them?” one of the soldiers asked.

“Better weapons and witch magic.” I winked. “Come on. There is something I want to show you here.”

We pushed through the sand, all the others losing their footing and sliding around the mounds of blazing hot particles. My foot hit the hollow ground, and I held my hand up for them to stop as I crouched down. As much as I hated this fucking place, I really loved this one small part of it. I placed my hand in the sand and pushed it down until the substance fully covered it, and I felt the grooves I was looking for. Letting my magic seep from my fingers and into the channels, I looked back at Zuri’s face. Her brows pulled together, looking at me as if I’d lost my mind. The lock clicked, and I smirked as the ground beneath us shook. Erect stone emerged from the ground and sand poured down like liquid as the mural I brought them here to see came to its full height.
